GOD OF THE WEAK

Song : SS&S 513.

Bible Reading  2 Chronicles 20 : 10-24

Oh God our help in ages past , be our help in years to come. The Bible  records this :

“The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. (John 10 : 10).

The enemy comes but to kill and destroy  but the God of the weak is strong, the El-Shaddai. He comes to protect, heal, deliver and to  establish. Shalom!

Across the nations,  among family members within ethnic settings, there are always the strong men, who are  full  of their boasts, before the weak. But men who know their God will always experience the hand of God.

I would want us to go through three Bible history cases to show the work of God of the weak.

In the time of Jehoshophat, Hezekiah and Joshua. we have the experience of what God  can do for the weak. In all the three, God proved Himself able. In all the three God fought personally  for the weak people.

The same God is for us. Let every child of God in this trying times refer  our God to what He is  known for as Jehovah   El- Shaddai -the Almighty God. We are His sons and daugters.

How God will fight for His people is anytime, is  definitely incomprehensible. He has access to unknown strategies to vanquish the enemy. The God of vengeance is the God of the weak.

(i) In the battle against the Amorites, He sent hailstones and stones from heaven,

(ii)  in the case of Sennacherib He sent an angel,  this means one angel to destroy 185,000 soldiers.

(iii) in the   the case of Hezekiah, against the Moabites, Ammonites and Edomtes , He used them to kill themselves to the last man.

Oh God our help in ages past,  be our help in years to come.

Some trust in horses but we shall trust the name of the Lord.  What about you?

Let us confess our sins, let us draw back to our God. He will deliver the suffering,  the sick and the weak at large, from the Sennaceribs of our time, from  the raging Amorites in the midst and the people of Mount Seir, who threaten our existence and indirectly mocking the name of our of God. The time is now.

BACKGROUND READINGS FOR TODAY.

  1. Against Jehoshophat King of Judah.

20:10 And now, behold, the children of Ammon and Moab and mount Seir, whom thou wouldest not let Israel invade, when they came out of the land of Egypt, but they turned from them, and destroyed them not;

20:11 Behold, I say, how they reward us, to come to cast us out of thy possession, which thou hast given us to inherit.

20:13 And all Judah stood before the LORD, with their little ones, their wives, and their children.

20:23 For the children of Ammon and Moab stood up against the inhabitants of mount Seir, utterly to slay and destroy them: and when they had made an end of the inhabitants of Seir, every one helped to destroy another.

20:24 And when Judah came toward the watch tower in the wilderness, they looked unto the multitude, and, behold, they were dead bodies fallen to the earth, and none escaped. (2 Chronicles 20: 10-11, 13, 23, 24,).

  1. Against Hezekiah King of Judah

18:1 Now it came to pass in the third year of Hoshea son of Elah king of Israel, that Hezekiah the son of Ahaz king of Judah began to reign.

18:7 And the LORD was with him; and he prospered whithersoever he went forth: and he rebelled against the king of Assyria, and served him not.

18:12 Because they obeyed not the voice of the LORD their God, but transgressed his covenant, and all that Moses the servant of the LORD commanded, and would not hear them, nor do them.

18:13 Now in the fourteenth year of king Hezekiah did Sennacherib king of Assyria come up against all the fenced cities of Judah, and took them.

18:15 And Hezekiah gave him all the silver that was found in the house of the LORD, and in the treasures of the king’s house.

18:16 At that time did Hezekiah cut off the gold from the doors of the temple of the LORD, and from the pillars which Hezekiah king of Judah had overlaid, and gave it to the king of Assyria.

NOTE THE BOAST OF MEN

18:27 But Rabshakeh said unto them, Hath my master sent me to thy master, and to thee, to speak these words? hath he not sent me to the men which sit on the wall, that they may eat their own dung, and drink their own piss with you? (2 Kings 18 : 1- 27)

The end the matter

The cry of the weak

19:3 And they said unto him, Thus saith Hezekiah, This day is a day of trouble, and of rebuke, and blasphemy; for the children are come to the birth, and there is not strength to bring forth. (2 Kings 19:3).

THE VOICE OF THE LORD COMES WHEN IT IS TIME.

19:32 Therefore thus saith the LORD concerning the king of Assyria, He shall not come into this city, nor shoot an arrow there, nor come before it with shield, nor cast a bank against it.

19:33 By the way that he came, by the same shall he return, and shall not come into this city, saith the LORD.

19:34 For I will defend this city, to save it, for mine own sake, and for my servant David’s sake.

Our God will defend us from the forces that are arranged agaist us. Let us keep faith on our knees.

GOD OF VENGEANCE.

19:35 And it came to pass that night, that the angel of the LORD went out, and smote in the camp of the Assyrians an hundred fourscore and five thousand: and when they arose early in the morning, behold, they were all dead corpses. (2 Kings 19 : 32 – 35).

  1. The Amorites against Gibeon in the time of Joshua.

Joshua 10 : 4 –  5

10:1 Now it came to pass, when Adonizedec king of Jerusalem had heard how Joshua had taken Ai, and had utterly destroyed it; as he had done to Jericho and her king, so he had done to Ai and her king; and how the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel, and were among them;

10:2 That they feared greatly, because Gibeon was a great city, as one of the royal cities, and because it was greater than Ai, and all the men thereof were mighty.

10:3 Wherefore Adonizedec king of Jerusalem, sent unto Hoham king of Hebron, and unto Piram king of Jarmuth, and unto Japhia king of Lachish, and unto Debir king of Eglon, saying,

10:4 Come up unto me, and help me, that we may smite Gibeon: for it hath made peace with Joshua and with the children of Israel

10:5 Therefore the five kings of the Amorites, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, the king of Eglon, gathered themselves together, and went up, they and all their hosts, and encamped before Gibeon, and made war against it. (Joshua 10 : 1 – 5)

THE CRY OF THE WEAK.

10:6 And the men of Gibeon sent unto Joshua to the camp to Gilgal, saying, Slack not thy hand from thy servants; come up to us quickly, and save us, and help us: for all the kings of the Amorites that dwell in the mountains are gathered together against us. (Joshua 10 : 6).

GOD OF THE WEAK HAS HIS OWN WEAPONS.

10:11 And it came to pass, as they fled from before Israel, and were in the going down to Bethhoron, that the LORD cast down great stones from heaven upon them unto Azekah, and they died: they were more which died with hailstones than they whom the children of Israel slew with the sword. (Joshua 10 :11).

Prayer

Lord God, be our help in our age. We are weak and only You are our  strength. AMEN.
