THERE IS A DAY OF THE LORD

Sermon on 22nd May, 2022.

First Bible reading : 1 Samuel 17 : 31 – 50.

Theme : There is a day of the Lord for the Boastful.

Background Message.

The Driver of this Sermon :

A great man of God, I was told, was  for a crusade in a city. At the time of the crusade rain threatened to fall. He told the crowd that he has prayed and that if the rain defies his prayer,  he will stop preaching the gospel. But rain fell and dispersed the crowd.

Note this scriptural observation :

17:5 He that speaketh flattery to his friends, even the eyes of his children shall fail.  (Job 17 : 5).

Flattery without putting God in context, can lead to great disappointment in the way  of people’s expectations.

In all my prayers,  I believe in God’s will, so I  trust in  His mercy for the outcome. Shalom!

How do you compare this Man of God with the experience of David? Note this:

David trusted the name of the Lord and prevailed over Goliath but  there was no sword in  his hand.

NOW THE SERMON :

Read the following:

1 Sam. 17 : 45-47, 50.

Read the above verses and verse  50 specifically:

17:50 So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and smote the Philistine, and slew him; but there was no sword in the hand of David. (1 Samuel 17 : 50).

Bible history is a great leading, to discerning minds. From Bible history, we get to fear God more and more. Even when  your adversaries threaten your existence, I say you should lean on the word of God and the experience of heroes past. Do not trust your eyes, but  trust in God, for God enables the weak and frustrates the  expectation of the strong man.

Goliath had threatened Israel, making a mockery of the name of God and Saul the king of Israel. He did this for several days and no one could reply him, until the young boy David came to the war front on a “Day Of The Lord”,  and heard him.

David told Goliath ” You come  to me with spear and sword, but I will come against you in the name of the Lord, whom you have despised.

David used a single stone and his sling and God being his battle axe directed the stone to the forehead of Goliath and and the stone sank into  the skull of  Goliath and he died.

MEN CAN BOAST, BUT GOD’S PEOPLE KNOW THAT GOD IS THEIR BATTLE AXE.

READ THIS POSITION FROM JEREMIAH AS FOLLOWS:

The boast of men :

51:17 Every man is brutish by his knowledge; every founder is confounded by the graven image: for his molten image is falsehood, and there is no breath in them.

51:18 They are vanity, the work of errors: in the time of their visitation they shall perish. ( Jeremiah 51 : 17 – 18).

The Position Of Them That Trust In The Lord.

51:20 Thou art my battle axe and weapons of war: for with thee will I break in pieces the nations, and with thee will I destroy kingdoms;

51:21 And with thee will I break in pieces the horse and his rider; and with thee will I break in pieces the chariot and his rider; (Jeremiah 51 : 20 -21).

In every problem in the life of a child of God, there is always a Day of the Lord.

Let me take us through this exhortation from the Lord in the epistle of James :

4:13 Go to now, ye that say, today or to morrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain:4:14 Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.4:15 For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that.

4:16 But now ye rejoice in your boastings: all such rejoicing is evil. (James 4 : 13-16).

Goliath never knew his life will end in  the hand of a shepherd boy, who had no sword, also  that with his own sword,  would his head be cut off. The Bible  warns that rejoicing in our boastings are evil.

Why A Man May Boast :

A boaster does not boast for nothing. People could boast, because of (i)  their riches, (ii) connection with influential people, (iii)  human strength,  (iv) and or for some spiritual powers, which might be devilish or divine.

In fact boasters may have fortified themselves, but God’s position says : “even that life in them is but vapour.” What happens when the vapour evaporates?

Which ever the case , we are warned in James 4 : 14, that we must beware for we know not what the morrow will bring.

A man who goes to war with a borrowed sword, should not boast,  because he does not know  if the owner of the sword will or will not  lend him that sword, in a day of great battle. Life in man is a borrowed sword.

Pray and trust God even when you think the situation favours you.

My prayer with us today :

Lord God have mercy on  me/us  on the day of adversity,  that I/we may  prevail despite odds.

Thank You Daddy Amen.
